On August 17, Deputy Consul General Cheng Hongbo attended a forum in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, organized by the Confederation of Toronto Chinese Canadian Organizations (CTCCO). Dozens of people attended the event, including descendants of military officers who fought in the war, members of the local Chinese community.

In his speech, Deputy Consul General Cheng reviewed China’s significant contributions to the World Anti-Fascist War as the main battlefield in the East during World War II, as well as the shared history of China’s fighting alongside the Anti-Fascist Allies, including Canada. He pointed out that the great spirit of resisting aggression bred during the war embodies the Chinese nation’s deep-rooted cultural tradition of taking responsibility for the world and standing united and unyielding in the face of foreign aggression. This spirit, he noted, is a unique symbol of identity shared by Chinese people at home and abroad. He emphasized that certain forces, including right-wing groups in Japan deliberately evaded, distorted, or even whitewashed historical facts such as the Nanjing Massacre, which is a grave affront to the countless fallen heroes and innocent victims of the war. He encouraged overseas Chinese in the consular district to continue upholding a correct view of World War II history, and called on them to keep history alive through accessible and diverse activities and platforms, carry forward the great spirit of resisting aggression, contribute to the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and play a unique role in building a community with a shared future for humanity and advancing global peace and development.
