Relationship between China and the Province of Ontario

Since China and Canada established diplomatic relations on October 13th1970, the friendly exchanges and cooperation in various fields between China and Ontario have made remarkable progress. On December 20th 1984, China established Consulate General in Toronto. In 2001,  Ontario set up the International Market Center in Shanghai , China and appointed permanent representatives. Besides, many local governments of Ontario also actively developed friendly relations with China , and some of them have established sister-city relations with their counterparts in China, such Toronto with Chongqing, the Town of Gravenhurst with the Tang county of Hebei Province.

The economic cooperation between China and Ontario has developed smoothly with frequent exchanges of business visits and increasing trade volume and investment on both sides. At present, China is Ontario's No.4 export country and No.3 import country. In 2002, the volume of the bilateral trade between China and Ontario reached about 8.7 billion Canadian dollars, accounting for 51% of the total bilateral trade volume between China and Canada.
